Husbands 1970 by John Cassavetes

STARRING

Husbands is a multimedia reimagining of Cassavetes’ raw and uncompromising 1970 film. Originally developed with my students inside the School of Visual Arts movie theater in Chelsea, the piece was later expanded and remounted at the Martinson Theater for the Under the Radar Festival.
In this version, the stage becomes a heightened, hyper-visible environment where the mechanics of filmmaking are fully exposed. Cameras, cables, and the live chaos of production are not concealed but embraced, creating a startling form of authenticity. Three live cameras operate throughout the performance, with their images projected onto a large screen upstage and across the surfaces of the set itself. The result is a destabilized, intimate landscape where performance and image collide—echoing Cassavetes’ own search for truth inside the fracture of human relationships.
